Acqusitions by ERP vendors such as Oracle and Infor have become commonplace, but today the news broke that Sage MicrOpay has acquired Flagship, developer of popular payroll package WageEasy. Acquisitions aren't as frequent in the payroll software market as ERP, which is surprising when you think about it - there are a lot of vendors selling the stuff, and it's about time we saw some consolidation. This acquisition will certainly be a plus for Sage MicrOpay, as WageEasy has a good user base in the hospitality industry and caters well for businesses which need robust time and attendance capability. This gives them a total of four different payroll/HR products, which should be enough to provide something for everyone. It remains to be seen how they will position WageEasy against their small business product, Genius and mid-to-large offering Meridian, as WageEasy would have the potential to compete against either. Maybe this is the start of an acquisition trend for payroll vendors - I for one think that it wouldn't be a bad idea.
